HOLIDAYS & TRADITIONS
We are entering
the seasons for Carnival, Lent and subsequent Catholic holidays that fall in
the wake of Advent and Christmas and are connected to the “moveable feast” of
Easter. Here are the first couple of holidays in the coming week as they are
celebrated in Luxembourg.
Saturday, 2 February--Candlemas Day (Liichtmesdag)

Sunday, 3 February--St. Blasius Day.

Super Bowl Sunday: San
Francisco 49ers v. Baltimore Ravens
3 February
Kickoff at 18:30,
US (EST); 12:30 am (midnight), Luxembourg (CET)
Although in no way
connected to any Luxembourg or European traditions, as an American, I would be
remiss in not informing homesick viewers about their options for watching the big
game from this side of The Pond.
This year’s game is
quite special in that it will mark the first Super Bowl in which both of the
teams have appeared in, but not yet lost, a previous Super Bowl: the 49ers have
won all five of their previous Super Bowls while the Ravens won in their only
previous Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl XXXV against the New York Giants.
This means that the winner will become the only remaining team in the NFL to
have appeared in multiple Super Bowls without losing one. [Source: Wikipedia]
There are several
options for watching the Super Bowl on Sunday (there may be others). Of course,
because it’s live, it will start around 12 midnight and go through the wee
hours of Monday morning. But if you must see it (and the famously funny
commercials), you know where to go.
Crossfire Bar
15, rue Dicks
1417 Luxembourg
You can watch live
from the Swedish-owned bar in the Gare. It’s a small space, so arrive early.
Apparently, they normally serve American-style hamburgers and beer.
Television
ESPN America, if you subscribe
to P&T’s “World” package cable service.
Satellite: If your satellite
service gives access to CBS Sports or ESPN in the US, or BBCTwo in the UK.
From your computer,
tablet and other mobile device :
You can purchase a Game Pass and watch the
game live (as well as all 2012 recorded games on-demand until 10 February 2013)
for just under 8€.
You can
watch online for FREE from the website of CBS Sports, which is the official
host for the Super Bowl.
However, please
check to see if the site is blocked for live streaming to computers outside the
US. If you don’t have a PROXY SERVER, you may not be able to watch through this
site.
Other Internet options
There are other
options for watching the game on the Internet for free from unofficial sites,
but their quality is often dodgy—and they may even be shut down before or
during the game by federal authorities, as they have been in the past.
One of the more
popular sites is ATDee.net (with links for watching ESPN America and BBCTwo). Check program schedules on the official websites
for ESPN America and BBCTwo.
