Super Bowl Sunday: San
Francisco 49ers v. Baltimore Ravens
3 February
Kickoff at 18:30,
US (EST); 12:30 am (midnight), Luxembourg (CET)
Although in no way
connected to any Luxembourg or European traditions, as an American, I would be
remiss in not informing homesick viewers about their options for watching the big
game from this side of The Pond.
This year’s game is
quite special in that it will mark the first Super Bowl in which both of the
teams have appeared in, but not yet lost, a previous Super Bowl: the 49ers have
won all five of their previous Super Bowls while the Ravens won in their only
previous Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl XXXV against the New York Giants.
This means that the winner will become the only remaining team in the NFL to
have appeared in multiple Super Bowls without losing one. [Source: Wikipedia]
There are several
options for watching the Super Bowl on Sunday (there may be others). Of course,
because it’s live, it will start around 12 midnight and go through the wee
hours of Monday morning. But if you must see it (and the famously funny
commercials), HERE are some options.
The Suit
6-9 February
20:00
Grand Théâtre
1, rond-point
Schuman
L-2525
Luxembourg
The Suit is a play, based on the short story by South African writer, Can Themba, which takes place during Apartheid in the 1950s. As the following excerpt explains, both the main story and the backdrop of the social era play an equal role in the production:
The story of The Suit
centers on Philomen, a middle-class lawyer, and his wife, Matilda. The suit of
the title belongs to Matilda's lover and is left behind when Philemon catches
the illicit couple in flagrante. As punishment, Philomen makes Matilda treat
the suit as an honoured guest. She has to feed it, entertain it and take it out
for walks as a constant reminder of her adultery. But the setting of
Sophiatown, a teeming township that was erased shortly after Themba wrote his
novel, is as much a character in the play as the unfortunate couple, and this
production lends it life and energy even with a minimal cast. (source: Grand Théâtre website)
